Why WhatsApp Status For Business?
In 2017, WhatsApp introduced a new feature called Status Update.
I tried it out and loved it and blogged about WhatsApp Status Marketing here.
Then came 2018, I started sharing my daily thoughts, work I do, what I learn from my son’s activities on YouTube.
And something interesting happened.
People were listening and interacting with me privately to say how much they loved looking forward to my WhatsApp status.
I was like ‘wow’. This WhatsApp status is going to be a good channel for promoting my business.
Then one day I wrote a story on mistakes a client of mine (a law firm) made with their website and how it affected their SEO rankings.
As I stopped halfway, my WhatsApp contacts slid into my DM, urging me to finish my story. They can’t wait!
So I continued and ended with a call to action for them to book an SEO Audit for a small token.
That marked the beginning of my WhatsApp Status Sales!
I continued telling more stories to this day.
One of the things I love about WhatsApp is that today’s sales conversation goes down in the DM.
WhatsApp is for closing sales.
Secondly, unlike WhatsApp broadcast, you can never annoy people with your WhatsApp Status, rather your story pulls them to you.
Have you ever been pissed off by those long unsolicited sometimes political, religious or sales broadcast messages that land in your DM?
Very annoying to me!
Sometimes I feel the status update feature was created for a sensitive introvert like myself.
Also, I recall the countless debates and surveys made by admins of some WhatsApp groups I belong to move the members to either Slack or Telegram and a lot of group members said NO!
Why? Because the platform is convenient right now!
A recent stat by Techcrunch shows that WhatsApp status has the highest number of active viewers of about 450 million.
Higher than Instagram stories, Snapchat, Facebook Stories, etc.
Even some Nigerian banks and churches have pitched their tent on this platform in order to interact with their customers.
Before selling your products and services on WhatsApp Status
Rule №1! Know Your Target audience
- Who is your ideal customer?
- What are their goals?
- What are their Pain Points?
- What do they value in a product or service like yours?
- Who makes the decision?
- What do they value in a service like yours?
Write all these attributes down and weave them into your daily WhatsApp stories.
Quick Hacks to build your WhatsApp Status Readership
Ask people for their WhatsApp numbers at an offline event you attend. I do this a lot.
Each time I speak at events or attend any event where my target audience is, during the networking stage, I ask them one simple question as we exchange numbers
“Are you on WhatsApp?”
Yes? Great, give me your WhatsApp line and save my own number on yours as well
This singular act alone has brought me so many referrals.
In fact, I landed an SEO contract with a real estate firm from someone that has being following my daily WhatsApp status updates.
Due to my showing up every day in his WhatsApp status feed, my name was the first thing he thought of when his client asked for a service I offer.
And he contacted me on WhatsApp and he took me straight to the office.
That’s the power of WhatsApp Storytelling and consistency.
